Stater Bros. elevates Mike Reed to EVP, CFO

The promotion comes nearly one year after McNiff became chief executive and the company reshaped its leadership team.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.— Stater Bros. Markets has promoted longtime executive Mike Reed to executive vice president and chief financial officer, effective Sept. 28, highlighting his expanding leadership role and decades of experience overseeing major growth and modernization efforts across the Southern California grocery chain.

Reed, who has served as senior vice president and CFO since 2023, will continue reporting to president and CEO Greg McNiff. The move comes as Stater Bros. continues to evolve its leadership team following McNiff’s appointment as chief executive last year.

“Mike has continued to take on greater responsibility, earned the confidence of those around him and is a great example of what can be accomplished through hard work and strong leadership,” executive chairman Pete Van Helden said.

Since joining Stater Bros. in 2014, Reed has played a central role in the company's store development strategy, helping guide the renovation of the majority of its Southern California store base. He was promoted to senior vice president of property development and finance in 2021 before assuming CFO duties two years later. Most recently, he also led the retailer’s IT department on an interim basis.

Reed brings more than 26 years of retail real estate and development experience. He holds a master’s degree in food industry leadership from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Boise State University.

Beyond the company, Reed serves as treasurer of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association board and remains active in industry organizations, including the International Council of Shopping Centers.

Based in San Bernardino, Calif., Stater Bros. operates nearly 170 stores and employs about 18,000 associates, making it the largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California as it marks its 90th anniversary.
