SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Former Supervalu Inc. executive Peter Van Helden has been named president and chief operating officer at Stater Bros. Markets. He succeeds Jim Lee, who will retire next month.
Former Supervalu Inc. executive Peter Van Helden has been named president and chief operating officer at Stater Bros. Markets. He succeeds Jim Lee, who will retire next month.
Van Helden was most recently Supervalu’s executive vice president of retail operations and was president and chief executive officer of Albertsons Inc.’s California Food Division until Supervalu acquire it in 2006.
All told, he spent 35 years with Albertsons, holding a variety of positions in operations, merger integration and dual branding.
As head of the California Food Division, Van Helden oversaw more than 500 stores and 41,000 associates. Prior to taking that position, he was president of Albertsons’ Jewel-Osco Division.
In stepping down, Lee is ending a career of four decades in grocery retailing. He joined Stater Bros. in 2002 as group senior vice president of retail operations. In early 2006 he was made executive vice president of retail operations and administration and later that year was promoted to president and chief operating officer.
Previously, Lee spent 25 years with Ralphs Grocery Co., and he was president and chief operating officer of Wild Oats Markets Inc. before joining Stater Bros.
