MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Walmart Canada veteran Lee Tappenden will become the company’s new chief executive officer, effective August 15. He joined Walmart Canada in 2010 and has held several senior positions since then.

Tappenden currently is chief operations officer. He will succeed Dirk Van den Berghe, who assumed the role in August 2014.

Before joining Walmart’s Canadian subsidiary, Tappenden held a number of global leadership roles, including chief merchandising officer at Walmart Japan and vice president of merchandising for the company’s international division.

As head of Walmart Canada, Tappenden will report to the president and CEO of Walmart International, David Cheesewright.

“Lee is extremely well poised to lead Walmart Canada and continue the momentum of growth we are seeing in this market,” said Cheesewright. “He has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout his career with Walmart internationally in both merchandising and operations, but he also brings to the role a real passion and heart for our associates and customers.”
