Target freezes prices on key school supplies as it kicks off back-to-school push

Retailer brings back $20 supply list and $5 backpacks, expands discounts and brand partnerships to court students and families.

MINNEAPOLIS—Target Corp. says it is holding the line on school supply prices this summer. On Monday, the retailer announced that it will maintain 2024 price levels on key back-to-school items as part of a broader push to offer value, convenience, and style to students, teachers, and families preparing for the new academic year.

The retailer is once again promoting its 20-item must-have school supply list totaling under $20, along with its popular $5 backpack. More than 1,000 school-related products — from notebooks to lunch sacks — are priced under $5. First-day outfits from Target’s Cat & Jack brand start at $5, while classroom supplies for teachers begin at $3.50.

“This is such an important time for everyone preparing to head back to class — or heading off to school for the first time,” said Rick Gomez, Target’s executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “The Target team will be there for families by holding last year’s prices on key school supplies and standing tall for unrivaled style, quality and exceptional value.”

As part of its back-to-school and college season strategy, Target is also reviving popular discount programs, including a one-time 20% off storewide offer for college students beginning June 29 and for teachers starting July 20. The promotions are accessible via Target Circle, the company’s free loyalty program. In addition, members of Target’s paid subscription program, Target Circle 360, will get early access to Target Circle Week deals, running July 6–12, and can save 50% on membership through September 13.

The company is also expanding its private-label and partner offerings. Target's new dealworthy brand now includes notebooks starting at $0.35 and backpacks for $5. A collaboration with Champion debuts in August, offering activewear under $40, while a new Herschel x LEGO backpack line arrives in July. A teen-focused décor collection from Studio McGee and expanded assortments through Target Plus round out the updated assortment.

For college students, Target is promoting storage solutions, bedding, apparel, tech accessories, and dorm décor. Most items are priced under $40.

The retailer continues to lean into digital convenience with shopping tools such as School List Assist, personalized teacher and student wish lists, and value bundles on its app and website. Fulfillment options like Drive Up and Order Pickup — along with Target Circle Card savings of 5% on purchases — are positioned to make back-to-school shopping easier and more affordable.
