Target to fill former Walmart spaces in Connecticut

The openings are part of Target’s plan to add 300 stores nationwide over the next decade.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target will open new stores in Norwalk and Guilford, Connecticut, on Aug. 17, marking the first Target locations in either town and adding to the retailer’s state footprint.

The Norwalk store, located at 680 Connecticut Ave., will occupy more than 117,000 square feet in a former Walmart that closed in late 2023. It will feature a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target’s full suite of fulfillment services, including same-day delivery, drive-up, and order pickup. The store will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Target plans to hire about 180 team members for the location.

In Guilford, Target is opening a 78,000-square-foot store at 900 Boston Post Road, a space previously occupied by Walmart, which closed in 2022. This location will feature an Apple Store and an optical department, along with the same fulfillment services as Norwalk. Store hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Target expects to employ around 100 people at the site.

Local economic leaders speaking to CT Insider said the arrival of Target in Guilford could help restore shopping traffic lost when Walmart closed, benefiting nearby small businesses.

The openings are part of Target’s plan to add 300 stores nationwide over the next decade. As of February, Target operated 22 stores in Connecticut; the new locations will bring the total to 24.
