WASHINGTON – In 2024, the National Retail Federation (NRF), representing the retail industry in Washington, aimed to enhance ties between retailers and Congress. Through numerous direct interactions, NRF highlighted the retail sector's crucial role in fostering economic growth and nurturing vibrant communities nationwide.
Recognized as 2024’s most effective trade association in events, media relations, and grassroots engagement, NRF remains committed to advocating for policies that support retailers, employees, and customers into 2025.
Retail Advocates Summit
In July, the Retail Advocates Summit united policymakers and retailers to showcase the industry’s economic impact. Over 100 bipartisan members of Congress attended the event, highlighting key issues, including tariffs, swipe fees, and organized retail crime. Representative Don Davis (D-N.C.) praised The Retail Experience for demonstrating retail’s contributions to careers and communities.
Fight Retail Crime Day
On October 24, NRF’s third Fight Retail Crime Day spotlighted the growing issue of organized retail crime. Lawmakers joined store tours to witness its impact firsthand, with over 150 legislators recognized as Congressional Retail Crime Fighters. Lead bill sponsor Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.) urged Congress to pass the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act, rallying bipartisan support.
Advocating for Swipe Fee Reform
NRF also advanced efforts for Credit Card Competition Act legislation to reduce excessive swipe fees. Retailers like Danny Reynolds, owner of Stephenson’s of Elkhart, stressed the importance of sharing personal stories with lawmakers to drive change.
“I’ve personally taken time away from my business to fly to D.C. and meet directly with my elected officials on several occasions,” said Reynolds. He encourages all retailers to advocate and share their personal stories. “Whenever I visit Washington, I continually hear from legislators’ staff that they really need to hear more directly from retailers on this issue.”
