SAN FRANCISCO—Uber Eats is now accepting SNAP EBT payments for grocery deliveries, the company said Tuesday. The initiative launches with Albertsons, Safeway, Jewel-Osco, Vons, and Walgreens locations, along with Duane Reade stores in New York. Uber says the move is a significant step in making nutritious food more accessible, particularly for those facing transportation challenges.

"With this rollout, we are taking a significant step forward in ensuring that everyone has access to the fresh food they need, especially those without access to reliable transportation for whom food delivery can be a lifeline," said Hashim Amin, Uber’s Head of Grocery and Retail Delivery in North America. “We believe that everyone deserves the convenience of delivery, regardless of their payment method."

To encourage use, EBT cardholders will enjoy $0 Delivery Fees on their first three SNAP-eligible orders. Uber is also offering a three-month free trial of its Uber One membership, which provides unlimited $0 Delivery Fees, among other perks, for EBT users who link their card in the Uber Eats app.

This expansion is powered by Forage, a payment company focused on increasing SNAP EBT acceptance online. Ofek Lavian, CEO of Forage, highlighted the partnership’s potential to transform access to healthy food. "Together, we will accelerate the onboarding of retailers accepting SNAP payments, enable families to conveniently order their groceries through Uber Eats, and ultimately expand access to healthy food for millions of low-income Americans across the country," Lavian said.

The move is particularly impactful for community partners like Albertsons Cos., which has been committed to tackling food insecurity. “By working with Uber Eats, we are able to make healthy food available to even more families in need,” said Bryn Banuelos, Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships for Albertsons Cos.

Jessica Johnston, Senior Director of the Center for Economic Well-Being at the National Council on Aging, noted that SNAP EBT access via Uber Eats empowers older adults. "This gives older adults more choices and flexibility, and it aligns with our mission to promote health and independence,” Johnston said.
