Walmart aims to rule back-to-school with thousands of deals

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Seeking to solidify its status as a top back-to-school shopping destination, Walmart kicked off the season Thursday by announcing deals on thousands of the products, from pens and backpacks to outfits and lunchboxes, all available for under $10.

With families expecting to spend more than $800 on average on clothes, shoes, school supplies and electronics, according to the National Retail Federation's 2024 Back-to-School report, Walmart says its selection of products under $10 can help parents, teachers and students buy everything they need and everything they want for the upcoming school year.

“At Walmart, we are proud to offer a back-to-school assortment that will excite our customers – enabling them to find everything on their list at the prices they know they can trust us to deliver,” said Julie Barber, executive vice president of general merchandise at Walmart. “My team and I look forward to being a part of such a memorable time in our customers’ lives each year!”

The retailer highlighted a wide range of offerings, including:

  • Thousands of back-to-school items under $10 – Deals on national brand and private label products include Pen+Gear composition books for $0.50, BIC 10-pack ballpoint pens for $1.77, and Pen+Gear highlighters for $0.88. Students can choose from top school supply brands like Crayola, Five Star, Paper Mate and Sharpie, as well as licensed products from top franchises including Disney, Nintendo and Marvel.
  • First-day fashion – Offerings include Walmart’s private brands, like the newly relaunched No Boundaries, plus Free Assembly, Scoop and Wonder Nation, along with styles from national brands like Levi’s, Justice, Reebok and Claire’s, just to name a few.
  • Best-in-class tech – Walmart aims to address all students' electronic needs, from trusted brands like Apple, HP, Samsung and JBL. The retailer is also offering the new Onn. Kids Tablet line, featuring an exclusive partnership with ABC Mouse that offers unique kids’ content free with purchase, and the company says customers can find high-quality products from top brands at a fraction of typical costs through its Walmart Restored collection of refurbished tech and appliances powered by Walmart Marketplace.

Walmart said the Classroom Registry experience on Walmart.com and the Walmart app was designed to help educators reduce their expenses for classroom supplies by making it easy for teachers to plan, shop and share their classroom wish lists. Consumers can find registries by searching Walmart’s registry page by the teacher’s last name and state.

The retailer said its stores are also the ideal destinations for food and snacks for students' school lunchboxes, and for health-related needs like prescription eyewear and back-to-school vaccines.
