Walmart China on Tuesday announced plans to open 30 new stores this year, remodel 55 established stores and add distribution centers as it enhances operations in the world’s most populous nation.
The company said it had budgeted $93 million for the projects. Walmart entered China 18 years ago and now has about 400 retail outlets in the country.
The company recently announced changes at the top of its Asia operations, including the appointment of Sean Clark, a 15-year Walmart veteran who spent the last two years overseeing logistics, marketing and merchandising in China, as chief executive officer of Walmart China, effective June 1.
Clark succeeds Greg Foran, who takes over as president and CEO of Walmart Asia.
Competition from indigenous rivals has forced Walmart to close some underperforming stores in China. The company’s China operations have also faced a workers strike recently as well as controversy over sales of tainted donkey meat.
