BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart is expanding its Fleet Development pilot program to allow more associates the opportunity to become truck drivers for the retailer.
According to a blog post by Fernando Cortes, senior vice president of transportation for Walmart, the launch of the retailer’s Fleet Development program last year gave supply chain associates in selected parts of the country a path to earning their commercial driver’s license (CDL) and becoming full-fledged private fleet Walmart drivers.
Now, through the expanded pilot, associates in stores, distribution centers, fulfillment centers and transportation offices within a 50-mile radius of a participating transportation office will be eligible to apply to the Associate-to-Driver program.
After associates complete the 12-week training course and earns their CDLs, they will have a Walmart driving job ready to step into, Cortes said.
Walmart drivers can make up to $110,000 in their first year with the company, in addition to the suite of benefits the company offers. Drivers who have been with Walmart longer can earn even more, based on such factors as tenure and location.
The Associate-to-Driver program allows participants to learn driving from current Walmart driving instructors. Cortes said the fleet is continually recognized for its commitment to safety. For example, the American Trucking Association has awarded Walmart the Safest Fleet in the Over 250 Million Mile Division for six consecutive years. Cortes said the pilot allows the retailer to continue to invest in its associates.
