Walmart has unveiled a service that permits people to "skip the check" and pick up their tax refunds in cash at Walmart MoneyCenters or customer service desks at Walmart stores.

The Direct2Cash service is designed to help people bypass fees associated with check-cashing and refund anticipation loans, services typically used by early filers and those expecting a significant refund.

Customers can opt in to Direct2Cash online or at 25,000 participating tax preparation locations, including some in-store locations staffed by Jackson Hewitt Tax Service Inc. Jackson Hewitt tax preparers are in more than 3,000 Walmart stores nationwide, although not all Jackson Hewitt Walmart locations offer the Direct2Cash option.

Participating Direct2Cash partners may offer the service for up to $7 at the time of filing, though some may choose to forgo a fee.

After filing, customers will receive e-mails containing confirmation codes for their federal or state tax returns. Those codes will be presented, along with proof of identity, when customers go to collect their refunds at Walmart locales.
