WAKE FOREST, N.C. — Wegmans Food Markets Inc. is boosting its planned presence in North Carolina with the confirmation of plans to open a fifth store in the state.
The new store will be located on the Route 98 bypass in Wake Forest, N.C., which is approximately 11 miles northeast of the Raleigh site where Wegmans is scheduled to open its first store in North Carolina in 2019. Plans are also under way for a Wegmans location in Chapel Hill and two sites in Cary. The timelines for the opening of those stores, and the one in Wake Forest, have not yet been announced.
In addition to Raleigh, N.C., new Wegmans stores are set to open in Virginia Beach, Va., and Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2019.
Wegmans has signed a purchase agreement for the Wake Forest store and is jointly seeking municipal approvals to build an anchor store as part of a larger mixed-use development by Stiles. Wegmans announced it will unveil a timeline for construction once all final approvals are in place. The store is expected to be up to 100,000 square feet and similar in design to Wegmans’ other newest stores.
“We look forward to the day when we can greet new customers and welcome back those who have shopped with us in other areas before,” said Ralph Uttaro, Wegmans’ senior vice president of real estate. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring incredible customer service, restaurant-quality prepared foods, and consistent low prices to Wake Forest in the future.”
Wegmans — a 98-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts that has been recognized as an industry leader and innovator — celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016.
Wegmans has been named one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For by Fortune magazine for 21 consecutive years.
