Wegmans launches annual campaign supporting summer feeding programs

Wegmans’ campaign helps food banks provide kids with adequate food during school breaks.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Wegmans Food Markets has kicked off its annual Fill the Bus/Fill the Backpack scan campaign, a companywide effort to support Feeding America food banks as they work to keep kids nourished over the summer break.

Beginning today, customers at all Wegmans locations can donate $3, $5, or any amount at checkout. 100% of contributions go directly to each store’s local food bank partner. The funds will support summer meal programs and backpack initiatives that provide children with food during weekends and when school-based meals are unavailable.

“As food banks grapple with federal funding cuts, they are struggling to find ways to fund their vast variety of programs supporting children, families, and individuals,” said Wegmans Community Relations Manager Linda Lovejoy. “Even small donations can add up to make a huge impact on reducing hunger in our local neighborhoods.”

The campaign supports Wegmans’ 48 Feeding America-affiliated food bank partners and plays a vital role in filling the gap left by the absence of free and reduced-price school meals during summer months.

“Summer is always a challenging time for families seeking to put nutritious food on their tables because schools are closed and free breakfasts and lunches aren’t accessible to the children who normally rely on them,” said Radha Muthiah, president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank. “This year, we know that even more people in our region are facing tough economic circumstances. That’s why we’re grateful to Wegmans and its customers for helping us ensure kids and families can get the good, nutritious food they need to thrive this summer and into the future.”

Wegmans has a longstanding partnership with local food banks, donating more than 36.6 million pounds of food in 2024 alone. Through its annual scan campaigns, customers helped raise more than $3.2 million last year to fight hunger in their communities.

The Fill the Bus/Fill the Backpack campaign will run throughout the summer. Donations can be made in-store at any checkout.
