The outlet will be the company’s third store in Massachusetts and the smallest store the chain operates in the state. A 138,000-square-foot Wegmans supermarket that opened in Northborough, Mass., in October is believed to be the largest grocery store in New England.
"It is a new design for us, a new concept for us," a Wegmans spokeswoman recently told the Boston Globe about the company’s new urban concept. "It’s a great location in a densely populated area that is close to Boston."
At 70,000 square feet, the Newton store will be the smallest Wegmans built in the past 10 years, although it’s still larger than many New England supermarkets.
The Newton store is being built as an anchor for a shopping complex that will include 160,000 square feet of shops, offices and luxury residences. While no date has been given for the opening of the supermarket, developers of the complex say they expect the retail portion of the project to be completed by he fall of 2013.
"It’s a great anchor for the project," says Stephen Karp, the head of the development company that is building the complex.
