CHARLOTTE, NC — Wegmans Food Markets is set to make a significant move in its North Carolina expansion with a groundbreaking for its highly anticipated first location in Charlotte.
The 110,000-square-foot store in Ballantyne, at 11550 N. Community House Road, will mark the Rochester, N.Y.-based grocer’s entry into the Charlotte market. The groundbreaking is set for September 24 and is not open to the public, Wegmans confirmed. The store is expected to open in fall 2026.
“This groundbreaking is a pivotal step forward as we prepare for opening day,” said Wegmans Vice President of Real Estate and Store Planning Dan Aken in a statement Monday.
The Charlotte Observer reported that Wegmans has finalized the store design and secured all necessary approvals. Frampton Construction Co. will serve as the general contractor, with more than 250 construction jobs expected to be created during the build.
Wegmans aims to bring on around 450 employees at its Charlotte location. Most hiring will start about half a year before the store opens.
About Wegmans and the Charlotte Market
Founded more than a century ago, Wegmans operates about 110 stores across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including one in the Raleigh area that opened five years ago. The Charlotte store is projected to employ about 450 people, with hiring beginning roughly six months before opening.
Along with its traditional grocery offering, Wegmans will feature a market café with indoor and outdoor seating. The grocer will face stiff competition in Charlotte’s $10.4 billion grocery sector, which already counts nearly 730 stores led by Walmart, Harris Teeter, and Food Lion.
