Expanding its presence in western Canada, Whole Foods Market Inc. earlier this month reported that it has secured three new Canadian locations, including its first two store locations in Alberta.

Whole Foods also announced a new store in greater Victoria, British Columbia, where the company currently has four stores in operation and two in development. The new Alberta locations are Edmonton and Calgary.

"Whole Foods Market has been in Canada for more than 10 years, and our success has been built, first and foremost, by our team members," Whole Foods Pacific Northwest region president Joe Rogoff commented. "Their ability to create a unique store experience that meets the very specific needs of the communities they serve has made a fundamental difference."

Whole Foods plans to open its first Alberta store in fall 2016 in Edmonton. The 42,000-square-foot store will be located in the South Park Centre.

The organic grocer said that it expects to have details for the specific site in Calgary where it plans to open a store in June, with an expected opening date for the new stores in the summer of 2017.

In British Columbia, Whole Foods currently operates four stores, with additional locations in development in North Burnaby (a store that is expected to open in August) and North Vancouver (which is expected to open in the summer of 2017). The new 40,000-square-foot store that will serve greater Victoria is expected to open in the fall of 2016 in part of the new Uptown mixed-use urban neighborhood.

Rogoff said Whole Foods will work with growers, suppliers, ranchers and manufacturers in Alberta and on Vancouver Island to source as many local products and services as it can find. "We’ll be connecting with community groups, other businesses, nonprofits and local community leaders to help us design our store and services and create dynamic partnerships," he added.
