Whole Foods Market bringing new store to downtown San Diego Sept. 23

The new location will offer more than 1,500 products from California-based suppliers, reflecting Whole Foods Market's focus on local and emerging brands

SAN DIEGO — Whole Foods Market will open a new 45,400-square-foot store in downtown San Diego on Sept. 23, marking the retailer's fourth location in the San Diego area and its 95th store in California.

Located at 201 W. A St., the store will welcome customers beginning at 9 a.m. on opening day. Regular hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The new location will offer more than 1,500 products from California-based suppliers, reflecting Whole Foods Market's focus on local and emerging brands. The assortment includes locally sourced produce, specialty foods, beverages, seafood, meat, bakery items and wellness products from suppliers throughout the state.

Among the store's highlights are a coffee and juice bar serving made-to-order beverages, a specialty cheese department staffed by trained cheesemongers, an extensive wine and craft beer selection, and a Prepared Foods area featuring hot and salad bars, pizza, sandwiches, sushi and ready-to-eat meals.

The produce department will feature items sourced from regional growers including Dassi Family Farm, Kenter Canyon Farms and Durst Organic Growers, while the grocery aisles will showcase products from local brands such as CHUZA, Cien Chiles, Happy Hens and Jackie's Jams.

The store's seafood offerings will include smoked salmon from The Santa Barbara Smokehouse and caviar from Tsar Nicoulai, while the meat department will feature products from Mary's Chickens, True Story Foods and Pozzi Ranch. Whole Foods Market said all seafood will be either sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed, and all meat offerings will meet the company's animal welfare standards.

The beverage department will carry more than 500 wines and 330 craft beers, including selections from 40 local breweries and 110 local wineries. The bakery will offer fresh-baked breads, seasonal desserts and local products from Bread & Cie.

To celebrate the opening, the first 300 customers in line will receive a limited-edition downtown San Diego tote bag and a Secret Saver coupon with savings of up to $100. Opening-day visitors will also be offered coffee from Beach City Coffee and protein bars from Perfect Snacks.

As part of the launch, Whole Foods Market will make a food and monetary donation to Porchlight Community Services, a local nonprofit that rescues surplus food and distributes it to communities in need. The organization previously received a refrigerated van through Whole Foods Market's Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program.

Whole Foods Market noted that all food sold in its stores must meet the company's quality standards, which prohibit hydrogenated fats, high-fructose corn syrup and more than 300 ingredients commonly found in conventional foods. Beauty and body care products must also meet the retailer's ingredient standards, which ban more than 240 substances, including phthalates, parabens and microbeads.
