In a bid to trim operating costs further, Supervalu Inc. is streamlining its wholesale grocery operations, combining three regions into two, the company said on March 20.
The consolidation will create an East distribution team, based in Mechanicsville, Va., and a West team headquartered in Hopkins, Minn. The company’s regional office in Pleasant Prairie, Wis., will be significantly downsized.
The moves will lead to the immediate loss of 200 jobs, mostly in Pleasant Prairie. But the reorganization should also create 120 positions, the company said, meaning a net loss of 80 jobs.
Kevin Kemp, president of Supervalu’s eastern region since 2006, was named president of the region based in Mechanicsville, and Bill Chew, who heads operations in Pleasant Prairie, will become president of the region based in Hopkins.
