COLUMBUS, Ohio — Big Lots has launched its 2010 Lots2Give program to support education, this year increasing both the number of schools selected to participate as well as the contest prize amount.

Big Lots has launched its 2010 Lots2Give program to support education, this year increasing both the number of schools selected to participate as well as the contest prize amount.

The broadline closeout retailer said Monday that the 192 schools nationwide that have been chosen to participate will be the recipients of an in-store donation program and have the opportunity to take part in an online video contest where they could win a share of $100,000 in cash prizes.

Now through July 5, customers can help selected schools by donating $1 or $5 at participating Big Lots stores. All donations will go to participating schools.

"Big Lots is dedicated to enhancing the quality of education in the communities we serve," chief executive officer Steve Fishman said in a statement. "We invite the public to join us in helping schools in need of financial support."

Schools were selected based on geographic location and level of need as determined by Big Lots. The program could mean thousands of dollars for participating schools. As in years past, the public will be invited to vote online to determine the winners of the video contest and cash prizes.

"The Lots2Give program allows us to connect with schools in need of financial support across the country," remarked Rob Claxton, senior vice president of marketing at Big Lots. "This year the program is even bigger and better."

Big Lots operates more than 1,360 stores in 47 states.
