DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has tapped Dr. Kevin Ban to serve as its new chief medical officer. In his role as CMO, Ban is assuming leadership of the Walgreens clinical office, overseeing the development of enterprise clinical programs and clinical analytics and directing provision of care, clinical outcomes, patient safety, and health care information systems and programs across pharmacy and operations.

Ban is also responsible for engaging with Walgreens’ network of health system and health service providers and payers in support of its health care programs and services. He will be collaborating with the Health Services team on strategic health care initiatives for Walgreens, while also working closely with the corporate development team as the company continues to explore health care innovation concepts for both Walgreens and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA).

He joins Walgreens from athenahealth, where he most recently served as chief medical officer, working with strategic clients, focusing on product development, and leveraging technology among patients and providers to drive improved outcomes. As a practicing physician, Ban brings more than 20 years of clinical experience and leadership of innovative medical systems development and performance improvement.

“Kevin’s demonstrated experience and passion make him a great fit for Walgreens’ business and strategy moving forward,” said Alex Gourlay, president of Walgreens and co-chief operating officer of WBA. “Dr. Ban shares Walgreens’ vision of creating improved health outcomes for the communities we serve through greater access to convenient health care services, products, technologies and medical expertise, and will play a critical role in helping us develop and execute strategy across these channels.

Ban will work in close partnership with teams across Walgreens as the company continues to introduce new physical and digital health care services, both in-store and via the company’s digital channels including Walgreens.com, the Walgreens mobile app and the Walgreens Find Care platform, which helps connect Walgreens mobile and online customers and patients to health care offerings and a growing selection of recognized health care providers.

Ban will be based at corporate headquarters here, and he will report to Gourlay.
