BENTONVILLE, Ark. — For people working inside a Walmart store, they quickly learn that every minute matters. Customers want to shop quickly and easily, and associates balance dozens of tasks to keep the store running smoothly.
That’s why digital shelf labels, or DSLs, have become such an impactful enhancement across their stores.
Today, about 2,300 Walmart U.S. stores are already using digital shelf labels, and the company expects to roll out the technology chain‑wide within the next year. For associates, that expansion can’t come soon enough.

Clear Prices, Faster Service
Walmart carries tens of thousands of items, and each one needs to display a clear, accurate price. With constant inventory changes, Rollbacks, and markdowns, pricing updates can pile up quickly and often take hours—or even days—to complete.
Before DSLs, associates had to walk the aisles replacing paper tags by hand. Now, they manage planned price updates through a centralized Walmart system, making it far easier to keep shelf pricing accurate and aligned with register prices.
Even with DSLs, price changes remain people‑led and support Walmart’s Everyday Low Price (EDLP) commitment. Associates review and approve updates through a secure system, typically outside of peak shopping hours, so pricing stays stable throughout the day. This ensures customers see consistent, trustworthy prices at the shelf and at checkout.
It’s important to note: prices are the same for every customer in a store. They do not change based on demand, time of day, or who is shopping. DSLs simply modernize how prices are displayed.
A Day on the Floor with DSLs
DSLs help maintain accurate, consistent pricing while saving associates significant time by eliminating manual tag replacement. That means associates can focus more on what matters most: serving customers.
Here’s how these labels support daily work:
Efficient Price Changes
With more than 120,000 items in a typical store and thousands of price adjustments each week, small efficiencies make a big difference. Tasks that once required multiple associates days to complete can now be done in minutes. The time saved goes toward helping customers, organizing shelves, and keeping product in stock.
Smarter Stocking with “Stock to Light”
Using their mobile device, associates can trigger LED lights on shelf labels to quickly identify which items need restocking. This means less searching, fewer steps, and faster replenishment—ensuring popular items stay available for customers.
Faster Online Order Picking
Pick to Light uses the same LED guidance to help associates locate items more quickly when fulfilling pickup and delivery orders. This speeds up preparation times and improves accuracy.
By reducing repetitive, low‑value tasks, DSLs free associates to focus on helping customers, maintaining store standards, and supporting smooth operations.
Better Operations, Better Experiences
Digital shelf labels replace paper tags, but their benefits go far beyond time savings. They reduce pricing errors, cut down on paper waste, streamline daily tasks, and keep pricing transparent and consistent.
Simple by Design
DSLs run on a closed system and do not interact with customers or collect any shopper information. They don’t include cameras or microphones. Their purpose is straightforward: display accurate prices.
As Walmart continues expanding DSLs across all stores in the coming year, the impact is clear—faster service for customers, simpler processes for associates, and more time spent where it matters most: on the sales floor.
That’s what innovation should look like.
