BURLINGAME, Calif. — According to a new report from Coherent Market Insights, the global retail ecommerce market is forecast to more than double in size over the next seven years, climbing from $7.29 trillion in 2025 to $15.62 trillion by 2032. With an expected CAGR of 11.5%, the report signals immense opportunity and competitive pressure for U.S. retailers operating in the digital space.

Driven by rising demand for convenience and a boom in mobile internet usage, the online shopping sector continues to accelerate globally. Fashion is expected to comprise nearly one-third of total sales in 2025, and online marketplaces are expected to command over 60% of ecommerce sales that year.

Why It Matters to U.S. Retailers
The U.S. ecommerce market is evolving rapidly alongside global trends, but domestic players must adapt to remain competitive. With Asia Pacific poised to dominate global e-commerce and the Middle East experiencing the fastest growth, American retailers face increasing international competition, even on their home turf.

Technology is at the core of this growth. From AI-powered product recommendations and logistics optimization to voice and visual search, advanced tech is transforming the customer journey. Amazon, for instance, has deployed more than 750,000 robots across its fulfillment network, significantly boosting speed and efficiency.

Opportunities and Hurdles
Smartphone penetration and 24/7 shopping convenience continue to attract new customers to digital platforms, especially in emerging markets. However, increasing privacy concerns, shipping costs, and delivery delays may worsen growth if not addressed.

For U.S. retailers, AI integrations and personalization are reshaping consumer expectations. Mobile commerce, subscription services, and sustainability commitments are emerging as key competitive differentiators.

Retail Trends to Watch

  • M-commerce dominance: Mobile devices drive most U.S. online traffic, making mobile-first design critical.
  • AI in customer experience: Retailers like Walmart and Target invest in generative AI and chatbots to enhance shopping journeys.
  • Sustainable commerce: Green packaging and low-impact logistics are growing priorities for values-driven consumers.
  • Platform shifts: The 2024 TikTok Shop ban in the U.S. forces brands to redirect influencer commerce efforts to Instagram and YouTube.

Competitive Landscape
Retail giants like Amazon, Walmart, and Target remain industry leaders, while platforms like Shopify, MercadoLibre, and JD.com continue to expand their global influence. Recent moves, such as Amazon’s launch of the budget-friendly “Amazon Haul”, underline how innovation defines the next chapter of retail e-commerce.
