SAN FRANCISCO — Instacart has launched Clementine, an AI-powered shopping assistant that turns meal ideas, recipes, and grocery lists into personalized, ready-to-buy carts.
Clementine is now available to most Instacart customers in the United States and Canada via the company’s marketplace. The assistant can generate recipes, recommend products based on household preferences, surface deals and lower-cost alternatives, reorder frequently purchased items, and build shopping lists for specific occasions.
Customers can also upload a photo of a handwritten grocery list or a screenshot of a digital list, then use Clementine to identify products and add them to a cart.
“Every night, millions of families ask the same question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ Not knowing the answer, let alone what to shop for, is one of the most universal human experiences, and a problem Instacart is built to solve,” said Chris Rogers, CEO of Instacart. “We’ve spent nearly 15 years learning how families shop and eat, and Clementine puts that knowledge to work.”
Instacart said Clementine draws on its grocery data and inventory intelligence, including more than 1.6 billion lifetime orders, a catalog of more than 2 billion items, and more than 10 million daily inventory signals. The company works with nearly 100,000 stores across more than 2,200 retail banners in North America.
The assistant can incorporate information customers provide about dietary and product preferences, including vegetarian, gluten-free, nut-free, and organic choices. It also uses customers’ previous Instacart orders to restock frequently purchased items.
Instacart said early usage indicates that customers often start with tasks such as restocking before moving on to uses such as recipe discovery. Orders placed with Clementine contain more items on average than typical Instacart orders and exceed the company’s $115 average basket size.
The company is also expanding Cart Assistant, its white-label AI shopping technology for retailers’ websites and apps. Food Bazaar, Heritage Grocers Group, and Woodman’s are now using the technology, while ALDI U.S., Harmons, The Save Mart Companies, and Stew Leonard’s are among the retailers expected to follow.
Cart Assistant combines Instacart’s grocery intelligence with a retailer’s catalog and customer data to recommend products, deals and recipes and to assemble carts. Retailers can customize elements such as the assistant’s name and tone, loyalty integration and recipe content.
The launches are part of Instacart’s broader push into agentic commerce. The company has also established integrations that allow grocery-shopping conversations initiated through Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and AI Mode in Google Search to continue on Instacart for delivery or pickup.
