Instacart, Schnucks expand smart shopping with Caper Carts in Missouri, Illinois

Caper carts use artificial intelligence, cameras, and built-in scales to identify items automatically. Customers can scan, bag, and pay directly at the cart, skipping the checkout line.

SAN FRANCISCO—Instacart is expanding Caper Carts in partnership with Schnuck Markets, Inc., bringing the AI-powered smart carts to more stores across Missouri and, for the first time, Illinois. This move builds on Schnucks’ successful rollout of the carts in 2024 and reflects the grocery chain’s continued commitment to transforming the in-store experience through technology.

Developed by Instacart Platform, Caper Carts are redefining how customers shop. Equipped with artificial intelligence, cameras, and built-in scales, these carts automatically identify items as they’re added, allowing customers to scan, bag, and pay directly at the cart, skipping the checkout line entirely.

With the latest rollout, Instacart is also debuting a new lower tray feature, making it easier for shoppers to add heavier or bulkier items like water cases, soda, or pet food. The addition enhances the cart’s functionality and accessibility for a broader range of purchases.

“Schnucks was an early adopter of Caper Carts, so they’ve seen first-hand how the carts can drive a double-digit increase in basket size,” said David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart. “We’re proud to offer a smart, personalized shopping experience that saves customers time and money.”

Caper Carts are fully integrated with Schnucks Rewards, offering digital coupons, real-time promotions, and personalized savings. On average, users save about $2.50 per trip just by using the carts, which adds up to over $200 a year for frequent shoppers.

According to Chace MacMullan, Senior Director of Digital Experience at Schnucks, customer response has been overwhelmingly positive:

“At our newly launched stores, we’re seeing times during the day where all 10 Caper Carts are in use. These carts are intuitive and make shopping fun—something we’re always striving for as a family-owned grocer.”

This Caper Cart expansion is just one piece of Schnucks’ broader digital strategy powered by Instacart Platform. Since first teaming up with Instacart in 2017 for same-day delivery, Schnucks has continued to roll out technologies like Carrot Ads, Eversight dynamic pricing, Carrot Tags, and a robust e-commerce experience.
