GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Casey’s General Stores is deepening its presence in Michigan with the purchase of all eight Maverik-owned convenience stores in the state — a mix of former Kum & Go sites and one newly converted location.
The stores, concentrated in the greater Grand Rapids area, include seven that Maverik inherited when it acquired Kum & Go, as well as a former Arnie’s Bakery location that the Utah-based retailer had recently remodeled into a convenience store. Casey’s began operating the sites last week, according to a company spokesperson.
The acquisition marks another step in Casey’s steady expansion across the Midwest. The chain, which has been building its network in Michigan’s southwest corridor with stores in communities such as New Buffalo and Bridgman, also broke ground last month on a new store in Hartford.
For Maverik, the move continues a pattern of selective divestment that began with the acquisition of Kum & Go in 2023. The company has sold more than 30 stores in recent months, including 23 former Kum & Go locations in Iowa and South Dakota, to Mega Saver. While Maverik had planned to rebrand Kum & Go’s seven Michigan stores earlier this year, those plans have now been shelved as Casey’s prepares to bring them under its own banner.
The transaction highlights ongoing consolidation in the convenience sector, where major regional players are refining their portfolios to enhance geographic density and operational efficiency. Casey’s, already the nation’s third-largest convenience retailer, continues to expand its mix of fuel, foodservice and grocery offerings to compete with both national and regional chains.
A spokesperson for Maverik declined to comment on the sale.
