New marketing chief takes over at Supervalu

MINNEAPOLIS — In further turnover of its marketing and merchandising leadership, Supervalu Inc. has named Michael Moore as executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

In further turnover of its marketing and merchandising leadership, Supervalu Inc. has named Michael Moore as executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

The supermarket retailer and wholesaler said Tuesday that Moore takes the marketing chief post with the departure of Julie Dexter Berg, who is leaving the company to return to the West Coast. He reports to Supervalu president and chief executive officer Craig Herkert.

In his new role at Supervalu, Moore will oversee all of the company’s marketing activities, including customer and brand strategy, advertising, customer loyalty, and research and analytics.

The 47-year-old Moore joined Supervalu last year as business transformation officer and, the company noted, has been pivotal in its turnaround strategy.

Before coming to Supervalu, he spent 24 years in various executive positions in customer business development at Procter & Gamble Co., leading cross-functional organizations that included sales, marketing, finance, operations and human resources, Supervalu said. He most recently served as director of P&G’s grocery retail group, where he led the business unit responsible for more than 30% of P&G’s annual food channel sales. Moore also served in leadership positions supporting P&G’s global beauty care division and led account teams dedicated to Supervalu.

"Michael has a terrific understanding of the food industry and the challenges we face as a grocery retailer in today’s environment," Herkert said in a statement. "I am confident that he will move quickly to build marketing programs that are effective and efficient while ensuring that we continue to drive traffic and sales through innovative and engaging consumer marketing programs. He is a proven leader, and I am thrilled to have him join our leadership team."

Berg became Supervalu’s chief marketing officer in March 2010, coming to the company from Brandmaking LLC, a brand and customer strategy consultancy she founded.

Just weeks before her appointment was announced in early February, Supervalu named Steve Jungmann as executive vice president of merchandising. Both Jungmann and Berg had taken over the roles previously held by executive vice president of merchandising and marketing Duncan Mac Naughton, who resigned from Supervalu in late September 2009 to become chief merchandising officer for Walmart Canada.

In January 2011, Supervalu announced that Jungmann left the company and was being replaced as chief merchant by Janel Haugarth, who was appointed to the new position of executive vice president of merchandising and logistics after having served as a corporate executive vice president and the president and chief operating officer of supply chain services.
