The transaction, expected to close in July, will increase Pump & Pantry's store count from 48 to 69 locations and marks one of the largest expansions in the company's history. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The acquisition includes 15 stores in the Des Moines, Iowa, market, two locations in Davenport, Iowa, one in Marion, Iowa, two in the Omaha, Neb., market and one in Lakeville, Minn. The agreement also includes five in-store Starbucks locations and seven in-store Smokey Row coffee shops.
Following the transaction, the locations will be rebranded as Pump & Pantry stores while continuing to participate in Hy-Vee's Fuel Saver program. Pump & Pantry said it also plans to expand Hy-Vee Fuel Saver redemption to all 69 of its stores in the coming months.
"We're energized to aggressively grow our footprint across the Midwest and to welcome new team members and new customers to the Pump & Pantry family," said Charlie Bosselman, CEO of Pump & Pantry. "We are also excited to announce our partnership with Starbucks Coffee and Smokey Row Coffee. We think these exceptional brands fit nicely into the hometown experience offered at Pump & Pantry locations."
The acquisition reflects Hy-Vee's strategy to focus on convenience stores adjacent to its grocery operations while continuing to grow the Fast & Fresh banner.
"The focus of the Pump & Pantry brand, as well as Bosselman's brand, is very much aligned with Hy-Vee," said Lucas Glasgow, senior vice president of Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh. "We're confident that these locations, under the Pump & Pantry brand, will continue to deliver the same outstanding quality and value to customers on the go as they've come to expect from our stores. This move allows us to put more focus on our core business of operating retail grocery stores as well as convenience stores that are adjacent to our existing Hy-Vee stores."
Glasgow added that Hy-Vee will continue operating 168 Fast & Fresh convenience stores after the sale and plans to build additional locations beginning in 2027.
The move comes as Hy-Vee continues to reshape portions of its retail portfolio. In recent years, the grocer has streamlined several in-store restaurant concepts and focused resources on core grocery and convenience operations.
Founded in 1971, Pump & Pantry is a fourth-generation family-owned business that operates convenience stores throughout Nebraska. The retailer offers fresh foodservice, branded restaurant concepts, loyalty rewards and a growing portfolio of alternative fuel options, including E15 and E85 at many locations.
Current employees at the affected Fast & Fresh stores will have the opportunity to transition to Pump & Pantry, and the company plans to host hiring events at select locations during the transition.
