Safeway names senior VP of pharmacy

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Darren Singer, a former GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) executive, has joined Safeway Inc. as senior vice president of pharmacy, health and wellness.

Darren Singer, a former GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) executive, has joined Safeway Inc. as senior vice president of pharmacy, health and wellness.

The food and drug retailer said Tuesday that Singer will have overall responsibility for retail pharmacy operations, specialty care, pharmacy services, compliance, benefit management and managed care. He reports to Kelly Griffith, president of merchandising at Safeway.

Most recently, Singer served as vice president of strategic growth at GSK. According to Safeway, he spent 25 years at the pharmaceutical giant in various leadership capacities, including as vice president of marketing for OTC wellness and as president and general manager of the Block Drug Co., which GSK acquired in 2001.

In addition, Singer has led global marketing initiatives, including the branding for such well-known names as Sensodyne, Breathe Right and Abreva. Before joining Block/GSK, he spent several years in advertising.

"His wealth of knowledge and proven track record in running some of the most visible and valuable brands in the pharmacy and wellness industry are well-suited to his leadership role at Safeway."

Safeway operates 1,694 supermarkets, most containing pharmacies, in the United States and western Canada.
