BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart’s $4 generic prescription program is turning 20, with estimated savings of billions of dollars for U.S. customers since 2006.
The program introduced a 30-day supply of select generic prescriptions for $4, helping reduce the cost of commonly used medications and expanding access for customers.
“Walmart challenged the industry to think differently about what affordable prescription access could look like,” said Kevin Host, senior vice president, Pharmacy, Walmart U.S. “That same mindset continues to guide us today. The opportunity now extends beyond the price of a prescription. It’s about making it easier for customers to connect the different pieces of their health and wellness journey.”
Walmart now operates nearly 4,600 pharmacies nationwide and has expanded its health offerings beyond dispensing prescriptions. Same-Day Pharmacy Delivery is available in 49 states, and in some markets, customers can receive prescriptions via express delivery in as little as 30 minutes.
The retailer also provides access to third-party virtual care providers via Better Care Services and personalized nutrition insights via its Nutrition Hub.
Twenty years after launching the $4 generic program, Walmart said its focus remains on removing barriers and making health and wellness more accessible, convenient, and affordable.
