Walmart to open first branded stores in South Africa

“We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers and communities.”

JOHANNESBURG — Walmart Inc. plans to launch its first branded stores in South Africa later this year, marking a milestone in the retailer’s international expansion and reinforcing its strategy to make high-quality, affordable goods accessible to more customers across the continent.

The move follows the company’s inaugural Growth Summit, held in April, which showcased suppliers from 12 African countries and led to the recruitment of small and medium-sized Africa-based producers.

“Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology,” said Kath McLay, president and CEO of Walmart International. “By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature Every Day Low Prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture.”

The company said its new stores will feature bright layouts, wide aisles, and Walmart’s characteristic customer service. Shoppers will find both global brands and locally sourced products across grocery, household, apparel, and entertainment categories.

The first stores are expected to open before year-end, with official opening dates to be announced in October. Walmart said customers can look forward to digital shopping tools designed to enhance the in-store experience. Hiring, location details, and community initiatives will be disclosed in the coming months.

“We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers and communities,” said Miles Van Rensburg, president and CEO of Massmart, Walmart’s South African subsidiary. “By listening and working together, we aim to build lasting relationships and deliver a delightful shopping experience that reflects the needs and aspirations of South Africans.”

Van Rensburg underscored Walmart’s focus on affordability: “Every rand matters when it comes to price. It is this balance and mindset on quality and Every Day Low Prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust. We’re committed to providing an exceptional in-store experience at every customer touchpoint, from a warm welcome upon entering the store, to helpful assistance in the aisles and friendly, efficient checkout.”

Walmart also highlighted its philanthropic work through the Walmart Foundation, pledging investments in food security, disaster relief, local entrepreneurship, and workforce development in South Africa. The retailer said its efforts will build on a global track record of combining business strengths with community impact.

Walmart currently operates more than 10,750 stores worldwide and employs 2.1 million associates. For the fiscal year ended 2025, the company reported $681 billion in revenue.
