Aldi will open its first California stores in March 2016 and expects to have about 25 open by next July, the company announced Thursday.

By the end of next year, Aldi says it expects to employ more than 1,100 people in Southern California, including those employed in its stores and in a regional headquarters and warehouse in Moreno Valley, Calif.

The move into California is part of a five-year strategic plan to open 650 new stores across the country. By the end of 2018, Aldi expects to operate nearly 2,000 stores in the United States. The company plans to invest more than $3 billion to support its expansion plan.

"At Aldi, we firmly believe that amazing quality can be affordable, and we are excited to bring our small-format, convenient grocery shopping experience to Southern California," Aldi chief executive officer Jason Hart said in a statement.
