GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. — Dollar General Corp. has acquired land in Jackson, Ga., that will serve as the location for a new 1 million-square-foot distribution center.

The deep discount retailer announced the purchase earlier this month. The central Georgia site is situated in both Butts and Spalding counties.

Plans call for construction to begin as early as this summer, with an estimated completion in the summer or fall of 2017, depending on the timing of receipt of all required governmental permits and development approvals, according to Dollar General.

At full capacity, the Jackson facility is expected to employ more than 500 people and will serve Dollar General stores in Georgia as well as surrounding states.

The new facility will be the 15th in Dollar General’s growing distribution network. The company said the project represents a capital investment of about $85 million.

“This state-of-the-art distribution center will help support our rapid store growth throughout Georgia and the Southeast,” Dollar General chief executive officer Todd Vasos stated. “I want to thank the leadership in Butts and Spalding counties, as well as Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and the Georgia Department of Economic Development, for their support and assistance on this project. It is exciting to see our business continuing to grow and create new jobs across the country.”
