Dollar General Literacy Foundation announces record one-day donation

The funding is expected to impact the lives of approximately 1.3 million individuals.

Goodlettsville, Tenn. – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation (DGLF) announced today its largest single-day donation in history, awarding over $13.2 million in grants to support adult, family, and summer literacy programs across the United States. The funding will benefit more than 1,200 public schools, libraries, and nonprofit organizations, and is expected to impact the lives of approximately 1.3 million individuals.

“For over 30 years, the Foundation has been investing in literacy and basic education programs in our hometown communities,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “Today’s grant announcement is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to student and teacher success. We are grateful to all the grant recipients for their commitment to advancing education and helping students thrive.”

The grants are distributed annually to organizations within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center. A complete list of 2025 grant recipients is available at www.dgliteracy.org.

Looking ahead, the Foundation will announce its 2025 Youth Literacy Grant recipients in August, with the 2026 grant application cycle scheduled to open in January 2026.

Additionally, the DGLF will kick off its sixth annual The Yellow Glasses Project on July 21, 2025. Customers can purchase yellow sunglasses for $2 at Dollar General stores, with proceeds benefiting the Foundation’s ongoing literacy initiatives.

Founded in 1993 by former CEO Cal Turner, Jr., in honor of his grandfather and Dollar General co-founder J.L. Turner, the DGLF has invested over $271 million in literacy efforts and supported over 25,000 organizations and 23 million individuals.
