Food Lion launches Grocery Giveaway promotion

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion announced on Wednesday its MVP Free Grocery Giveaway promotion, promising the chance for one shopper at each of its supermarkets to win free groceries worth as much as $100 every day through July 28.

Food Lion has more than 1,100 stores in 10 states in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, meaning there will be more than 15,000 winners over the duration of the promotion, the company noted.

"Winning customers will enjoy immediate savings of up to $100, not to exceed their grocery bill, at checkout through this ‘pay it forward’ program," the company said in a statement.

To be eligible to win, Food Lion shoppers must purchase five participating products with their MVP loyalty cards. Participating products will be clearly tagged at the shelves, the company said.

Earlier this week, Food Lion announced it had lowered prices on thousands of staple items. The lower prices took effect July 13, the same date that new signage began appearing in the stores designed to help shoppers easily identify potential savings.

Food Lion, which is owned by Delhaize America LLC, said the price reductions are based on extensive customer research into such frequently purchased items as apple juice, peanut butter, frozen vegetables, canned beans, paper towels and detergent.

"Affordable prices and great deals are a significant part of our heritage at Food Lion and the reason why we have invested further to bring our customers even lower prices," said Food Lion president Meg Ham.

Ham took over at Food Lion last fall and helped launch a makeover that was intended to get shoppers to spend more in the stores and that included price reductions, new signage and store remodels, which are continuing.

Delhaize America’s parent — Belgium-based Delhaize Group — is planning to merge with Koninklijke Ahold N.V. of the Netherlands, creating a company to be called Ahold Delhaize. It would be the fourth-largest food retailer in the United States by market share, after Walmart, Kroger Co. and Albertsons Cos. Ahold Delhaize would have 2,063 stores and annual sales of nearly $37 billion in the United States. The companies said they expect the deal to close in mid-2016.
