GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — SpartanNash has named two executives to key leadership positions. Earlier this month the company promoted Amy McClellan to senior vice president and chief marketing officer. The following week, Bennett Morgan joined SpartanNash as senior vice president and chief merchandising officer. Both report to SpartanNash president and chief executive officer Tony Sarsam.

McClellan joined SpartanNash in 2019 when the company acquired Martin’s Super Markets. She began her career in the grocery industry in high school when she was hired as a part-time cashier. During her 20 years with Martin’s, McClellan held various roles with increasing responsibility, including communications specialist; market research supervisor; loyalty and marketing programs manager; director of marketing; vice president of sales and marketing; and senior vice president of retail operations and merchandising.

McClellan played a critical role in the SpartanNash acquisition of Martin’s, leading to her appointment as division vice president of retail for SpartanNash. In March 2021, McClellan was promoted to vice president of fresh merchandising, overseeing the fresh product categories across 145 company-owned stores and 2,100 independent retail customers.

In her new role, McClellan will lead the marketing function.

“Promoting from within is a key component of our People First culture,” said Sarsam. “Amy has brought invaluable expertise and leadership to SpartanNash, and this role is a natural progression in her career path. We look forward to implementing her creative, data-driven strategies for enhancing our retail branding, expanding our e-commerce business, and growing our total market share among primary and secondary shoppers.”

She serves on the SpartanNash Foundation board of trustees, the South Bend (Ind.) Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors and the Ohio-based Buehler’s Fresh Foods board of directors.

Morgan will lead the company’s merchandising function. He joins SpartanNash from Amazon, where he helped launch its fast-growing grocery business, including opening physical stores across the country. He most recently served as Amazon Fresh category leader overseeing produce and protein products and having previously managed center store products as well.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bennett to the team,” said Sarsam, who noted that recruiting top talent is another part of SpartanNash’s People First strategy. “Bennett will play a critical role in driving innovation for our customers and excellence with our in-store experience.”

Prior to Amazon, Morgan served as vice president of merchandising for Walmart China and Japan, managing all non-buying portions of the merchandising organization. His key focus areas included cost negotiations and advanced data-led capabilities in assortment, pricing and promotions. Morgan also spent several years of his career at H-E-B leading store operations, supply chain manufacturing and merchandising.

McClellan and Morgan are the sixth and seventh additions to the SpartanNash executive leadership team since Sarsam joined the company in September 2020.
