GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — SpartanNash has hired Djouma Barry as senior vice president and chief retail officer. With an extensive background in retail operations at industry giants like Kroger and Target, Barry steps into the role previously held by Thomas Swanson, who will transition to a consulting role by year-end.
Barry brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having worked his way up from a sales floor leader to overseeing 1,900 Target stores as vice president of process operations, a role in which he managed $93 billion in annual sales. His career also includes senior roles at Old Navy and Lululemon, where he directed strategy and operations. SpartanNash CEO Tony Sarsam says Barry's ascent from the sales floor to the executive ranks embodies SpartanNash's "People First" approach for its 12,000+ retail associates.
“Djouma’s journey from store floor to executive table makes him a highly inspirational leader,” said Sarsam. “He will play a critical role in advancing our People First culture and enhancing the guest experience in our stores across SpartanNash’s expanding footprint.”
The company says SpartanNash’s dual focus on food wholesale and grocery retail positions Barry to make an immediate impact on store operations and guest engagement in communities across the U.S. Barry will be responsible for guiding SpartanNash’s retail strategy for its 147 grocery stores, including Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets, and D&W Fresh Market.
