Supervalu Inc. has appointed Janel Haugarth, who had been executive vice president, president and chief operating officer of supply chain services, to the new position of executive vice president, merchandising and logistics.

Steve Jungmann, who had been executive vice president of merchandising, has left the company.

In her new role, Haugarth is responsible for all merchandising activity across Supervalu’s traditional retail businesses and its independent retail customers. In effect, the move consolidates direction of all merchandising activities — except those associated with Sav-A-Lot, the limited assortment grocery banner — under a single EVP. Haugarth, a 30-year veteran of the company, continues to oversee all supply chain and logistics operations.

Jungmann’s departure marked the second exit within days of the chief merchant of a major supermarket operator: Dan Portnoy, senior vice president and chief merchandising and marketing officer for Winn-Dixie Stores Inc., resigned earlier this week and his position eliminated.
