SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Vallarta Supermarkets is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a yearlong series of events that highlight the growth, cultural roots, and strong community connections of the Latino-owned grocery chain.
Founded in 1985 as a single carnicería in Van Nuys, Vallarta has grown to 63 stores across California while remaining family-owned and dedicated to offering authentic ingredients, freshly made staples, and a friendly shopping experience. “This milestone is a tribute to our loyal customers, dedicated team members, and the values instilled by the Gonzalez family,” said Lizette Gomez, Vallarta’s director of marketing.
During its anniversary celebration, Vallarta hosted Maestro De La Asada, inviting influencers nationwide to share family recipes using Vallarta products. Four finalists competed in a live cooking competition judged by celebrity chefs and the chain’s culinary team, with the winner receiving a $15,000 grand prize.
The retailer also invested in upgrades at the Valley Plaza Sports Complex, adding BBQ pits, picnic tables, landscaping improvements, and an ADA-compliant walking path. “Vallarta’s generous gift to Valley Plaza Park makes it a friendlier and more accessible place for our families,” said Los Angeles City Councilmember Adrin Nazarian.
Additionally, Vallarta donated $30,000 to 32 charities supporting education, hunger relief, and local nonprofits, with representatives visiting their neighborhood stores to accept the donations.
Looking ahead, the grocer said it will keep expanding its store network, improving product selections, and strengthening community-focused initiatives as it builds on four decades of serving California’s diverse neighborhoods.
