SAN FRANCISCO — DoorDash is rolling out a new AI-powered search experience that helps customers find meals, groceries and restaurant reservations using natural language rather than traditional keyword searches. The new feature, called Ask DoorDash, lets users describe what they want in their own words and receive personalized recommendations in seconds.
Available now in select U.S. markets on iOS for restaurant discovery and grocery shopping, Ask DoorDash is also being expanded to DoorDash Reservations and to additional users nationwide in the coming weeks.
This feature enables shoppers to upload recipe links, cookbook photos, or grocery lists, which DoorDash then converts into a completed shopping cart. Customers can also request reorders of past grocery purchases, receive product suggestions based on prior orders, and refine recommendations through a conversational interface.

“We’ve spent over a decade building an app that puts everything in your city at your fingertips, but more options shouldn’t mean more work,” said Andy Fang, co-founder of DoorDash. “Now you can search DoorDash in your own words to find exactly what you want. And we know if the vegetarian option you prefer is on the menu before recommending a restaurant, or that you recently ordered flour and sugar before stocking up on groceries. The app works harder so you don’t have to.”
DoorDash said the average U.S. consumer has access to roughly 800,000 menu items and grocery products on its platform. Ask DoorDash searches that inventory to help users discover restaurants, build grocery carts, and find products more efficiently.
For food delivery, customers can enter prompts such as “filling dinner for a family of 4” and receive tailored restaurant recommendations based on dietary preferences, budget, group size, and order history. Users can continue refining results with follow-up questions before generating a suggested order and proceeding to checkout.
DoorDash is also extending the conversational experience to restaurant reservations. The company said users will soon be able to describe the dining experience they want, such as a downtown date-night dinner with cocktails, and receive reservation recommendations based on availability and preferences.
The launch marks DoorDash’s latest effort to integrate generative AI into commerce, reducing search friction and helping consumers move more quickly from discovery to purchase across food, grocery, and dining categories.
